Locked Out in Plantation? A Calm, Step-by-Step Plan
Updated: November 2026
If you're locked out in Plantation, first make sure no one inside needs help, then hunt for a spare; before any locksmith heads your way, get the full price with the trip included and confirm it won't change at the door. House lockouts with us start at $99 and usually total $99–164, with the same price at night. The steps below work whoever you call.
- Licensed & insured
- 6-month workmanship warranty
- About 20 min to you

Step 1: Anyone in danger?
If a child, a person who needs care or a pet is shut in, or a stove or iron is left on, call 911 first. Those calls come before any lock.
Step 2: Think through every spare
- A family member, a neighbor two doors down, a coworker who once fed your cat.
- Renting? About a third of Plantation homes are rented (Data USA); your landlord or property manager may hold a key and be able to come faster than anyone.
- In a townhome or condo community, the management office may keep one on file.

Streets under the oaks.
Homes from the 1950s and 60s, many still on their first locks.
Step 3: Walk the whole property
Try the back slider, the side door and the garage keypad. On larger lots in Plantation Acres, a back gate or barn door is sometimes left open. Don't force a window or break glass; an injury or a broken impact pane costs far more than a lockout.
Step 4: Four questions for any locksmith, before they drive
- "What's the total, including the trip?" You want the amount for a standard lock, not a separate "service call."
- "Is it more at night or on the weekend?" Settle that now.
- "Is damage-free entry your first move?" Picks and bypass tools should be the plan, the drill a last resort.
- "Is the price guaranteed before work starts?" If the lock is not what was described, an honest locksmith gives you the new figure and waits for your yes.
Also notice how the call was answered. If nobody says a company name, ask for it; a vague "locksmith service" with no name is often a dispatch center. Write down the business name and the technician's name.
The bait price to watch for
A "$19" or "$29" quote is the opening move in a well-known overcharge. You will find $19 service calls advertised for Plantation, too. Palm Beach County's consumer office describes how it unfolds: the quoted rate is called "wrong" on arrival, then extra lines show up: a fee just for coming out, plus a minimum of one hour of labor (Palm Beach County Consumer Affairs). If someone won't give you any total on the phone, keep calling around.
Step 5: The gate, if there is one
Hawks Landing has a 24-hour manned gate (Wilder Real Estate Group); call the gatehouse and give the locksmith's name, or keep your phone on so the guard can reach you. If your community uses a gate app, add the visitor there. On a private estate gate in Plantation Acres, tell us whether it's open, coded or chained so we bring the right tools.
Step 6: While you wait
Get to shade or a lit spot, save battery, and find something showing your address: a bill in your email, your registration, a neighbor who can vouch.
Step 7: When the technician arrives
- Check the ID and that the name matches the one you were given.
- Agree the total out loud before anything is touched.
- Show a photo ID that has this address on it; failing that, a lease, deed or utility bill. If it's inside, show it once the door opens.
- Pay after you're in and the lock works, ideally by card.
Step 8: After you're back inside
- Lost the keys, rather than locking them in? Rekey today: the first lock is $95, and every other lock on that visit $49.
- Keypad died? Put fresh batteries in every few months (a phone reminder helps) and store the backup key somewhere you can get to from the street.
- Spare key: with a person you trust, not under a pot by the door.
How we answer the four questions
Total from $99, trip included, usually $99–164. Nights and weekends cost the same. Damage-free entry first; drilling only on a broken or high-security lock, and only after you agree the price of the replacement. The price is fixed before work starts. Because Charlie D. is based in Plantation, he's usually at your door in about 20 minutes; he names the time for your street when he picks up.
Will you open my door if my ID is inside?
Yes; you show it right after the door opens, before we leave.
Can you open a smart lock with a dead battery?
Usually, through its backup key cylinder or the maker's emergency power contacts.
Do you charge if you can't get in?
No. Should the only way in be drilling and you say no to it, the opening is free. If you decline the price we give on site, you owe nothing, and calling it off before we arrive costs nothing either.
