Rekey or replace?
If the lock turns smoothly and you only want old keys dead, a rekey for $95 is the cheaper answer. Replace when:
- the cylinder wobbles, sticks or needs jiggling;
- the deadbolt doesn't reach fully into the frame;
- the finish has corroded through, or the knob has a cracked spindle;
- you want a stronger deadbolt, a keypad or a smart lock;
- the brands don't match and you want one key for the whole house.

Plantation's original hardware
The city was incorporated in 1953, and the first "long acres" lots are in today's Historic District around Fig Tree Lane and Palm Tree Road (City of Plantation). An installer working here describes the Historic District as mid-century homes with original openings, and Plantation Isles as canal-front houses from the late 1950s on (Republic Window). On doors like these we often find:
- thin strike plates held by short screws in soft wood;
- knob-in-deadbolt pairs from two different decades;
- side and utility doors with a knob and no deadbolt at all. For the garage-to-house entry, a Florida sheriff's office recommends a Grade 1 single-cylinder deadbolt, a strong strike plate and 2½-inch hinge screws (Lee County Sheriff) — a sensible starting point we can install. The full story is in our guide to older Plantation homes.
How the install goes
- Text us a picture of the door's edge and the lock, so the right parts come along.
- Price agreed by phone, before Charlie D. drives over.
- Old lock out; the bore, latch hole and frame checked.
- New lock in, strike aligned so the bolt seats without pushing on the door.
- Every key tested, plus a check from both sides. No lock gets changed until we've seen ID tied to the property — a license with the address, a deed, a lease or a bill.
The hardware we fit
- Brands: standard locks come from Kwikset or Schlage, with Grade 2 or the heavier Grade 1 deadbolts. High-security cylinders from Mul-T-Lock or Medeco are quoted separately.
- Smart locks: Ultraloq, Level, August, Yale, Schlage's Encode, and Kwikset's Halo and SmartCode.
- Finishes: matte black, satin nickel, or a coastal stainless that stands up to sprinklers and damp better than plated brass.
- Two keys with every new lock; extras $5 each.
- Warranty: six months on our installation, plus the maker's own warranty on the lock.
Impact doors
Many Plantation entries are impact-rated, and their hardware is part of an approved assembly. We match what the approval allows — see impact-door locks.
Questions
Do I need HOA approval to change a lock?
Not usually for a like-for-like swap. Changing the look of an outside door in a gated community may need it — ask your association.
Can I supply my own lock?
Yes — the labor is $95, and if a photo of the box and the door shows it won't fit, we say so before you pay us a cent.
How long does it take?
About 30–45 minutes per standard lock when the door is in good shape.
Is the install guaranteed?
Our work carries a six-month warranty: if the lock stops working the way it should, Charlie D. comes back and sets it right at no charge.
Will the new lock take my existing key?
It can, if we pin it to match. Most people take the chance to get one new key for everything.
Can you tell whether someone tried to pick my lock?
Sometimes. Fresh bright scratches around the keyway, a key that suddenly drags, or pry marks on the frame are worth a look; skilled picking can leave almost nothing. If you think someone tried to get in, report it to Plantation police on the non-emergency line, 954-797-2100 (City of Plantation), then call us to rekey or upgrade the lock.
