House Lockout in Plantation, FL

A house lockout in Plantation, FL starts at $99 and usually ends up between $99–164, whether you call at 7 a.m. or 2 a.m. You hear the price on the phone before Charlie D. leaves, and it moves only if the door isn't what the call suggested — in which case the revised figure comes before any work.

What a lockout costs, lock by lock

What's on the door From Usual total
Ordinary deadbolt, knob or lever $99 $99–164
Keypad or smart lock that went dead $99 $99–164
High-security cylinder or multi-point impact-door lock quoted by phone —
Keys gone for good: rekey while we're there $49 per lock $49–64

Covered by the starting price: the drive, opening one standard home lock without drilling, and a quick test that it still locks and unlocks. Nights, weekends and holidays cost the same.

What raises it: two locks both thrown, a cylinder that's broken inside, a patented high-security key, multi-point hardware on a hurricane-rated door, or a long hold-up at a guard gate.

How Charlie D. gets you back in

  1. The call. Your address, which door, what kind of lock (send a photo if you can), and the price.
  2. At the door. He shows his ID before touching anything.
  3. Non-destructive first. Picking or a bypass tool opens most residential locks with no marks.
  4. Smart locks. Jump-start the batteries or use the override key slot.
  5. Drilling only as a last step, for a broken or high-security cylinder — and only after you agree to the replacement price.
  6. Proof you live there. A driver's license with this address on it — or your lease, deed or a power bill addressed to you. If those are inside, we look at them right after the door opens.

Streets under the oaks.

Homes from the 1950s and 60s, many still on their first locks.

Guard gates and open streets

Hawks Landing is a walled community of roughly 575 homes with a gate staffed around the clock (Wilder Real Estate Group). Phone the gatehouse and give them our name; we also tell the guard the business name and Charlie D.'s name, then wait at the arm until you've cleared us. A listings directory also marks Eldorado Estates and Paragon Plantation as gated (ListSellFL). Most of Jacaranda has no gate at all, so we pull straight up to the door. Expect Charlie D. in about 20 minutes wherever you are in Plantation; he tells you the time for your street before he sets off.

Older Plantation doors

The typical house sold here lately was built around 1974 (Momentum), and many still carry their first knobs and deadbolts. A worn cylinder sometimes refuses to pick cleanly; if so, we'll say so and price a lock change before drilling. In the Historic District, where the first Peters-era lots line Fig Tree Lane near the Plantation Historical Museum (City of Plantation), that's even more common. If the lockout happened at the side gate instead, see gate locks.

Before any locksmith drives to you

Whoever you call, listen to how the phone is answered: a real local business gives its own name, while a bare "locksmith services" often means a call center that sells the job on. Then ask for a firm total, or at least a maximum, for your kind of lock, trip included; ask whether they pick or bypass before they drill; and expect photo ID at the door before any tool comes out. Florida issues no statewide locksmith license, so the name, the price and the ID are what you can actually check. More in our locked-out guide.

Once you're inside: if the keys are lost rather than locked in, adding a rekey before Charlie D. packs up costs $49 for each lock; a worn lock is better replaced, from $145.

Condos, villas and townhouses

Plantation isn't only detached houses. In the 2010 Census count the city's own housing plan quotes, 41% of its 38,833 homes were in multi-family buildings and another 11% were attached single-family homes such as villas and townhouses (City of Plantation). If that's you, locked out at night:

Renters

About one Plantation household in three rents (Data USA). We open a tenant's own home with proof of residence. We do not change locks to shut a tenant out — Florida law forbids it (F.S. 83.67).

Lockout questions

I didn't lock myself out — I lost the keys. Is that different?

We open the door the same way, then rekey the locks on that visit so whoever finds the keys can't use them.

Will the door get damaged?

Rarely with standard locks. Drilling is the exception, and you approve it first.

My key snapped off inside the lock. Can you get it out?

Usually, yes: the broken half is pulled out with thin extractor picks, the door is opened, and a new key can be cut on the spot. If the cylinder was damaged on the way, you get a price for a rekey or a new lock before anything else happens. Don't push the stub in further with a second key.

Is there a night fee?

No. 3 a.m. costs what 3 p.m. costs.

What can I do until he arrives?
