Rekey Your New Plantation Home
A just-bought Plantation home can be rekeyed for $242 — that's four standard locks moved to a single new key — and each lock past the fourth adds $49 on that visit. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the old keys exist — the sellers, their family, a dog walker, a pool service, a past tenant. A rekey makes all of them useless in about an hour.
- Licensed & insured
- 6-month workmanship warranty
- About 20 min to you

Plenty of keys changed hands last year
1,097 homes sold in Plantation in 2025 — 647 single-family houses plus 450 condos and townhouses (Miami REALTORS single-family report; condo report). Florida Realtors' own list for new owners starts with "Change locks" (Florida Realtors).
What $242 includes
- Four standard locks — knobs, levers or deadbolts — switched to a single new key
- The trip to your house
- Each new key tested, and an old key tried to prove it's dead
- Two new keys for every lock, and extra copies at $5 apiece More locks on that visit: $49 each ($49–64).

Streets under the oaks.
Homes from the 1950s and 60s, many still on their first locks.
Other move-in jobs
| Job | From | Usual total |
|---|---|---|
| Tired lock swapped for a new standard lock | $145 | $145–275 |
| Smart lock or keypad installed (labor) | $169 | $169–269 |
| Builder's smart lock reset: seller's users removed, your codes set, backup cylinder rekeyed | $95 | — |
| Slider latch repaired | $99 | $99–179 |
| Gate or shed lock keyed to the house | $49 | $49–64 |
| Mailbox lock | $90 | $90–125 |
What pushes it higher: a fifth or sixth lock, a mix of brands where one cylinder has to be swapped for a common key, high-security cylinders, or a lock too worn to take new pins.
A Plantation move-in checklist
- Every exterior door — front, side, patio, plus the interior garage door.
- Older hardware. The typical home sold here lately was built around 1974 (Momentum). Original locks that wobble are better replaced than rekeyed — our older-homes guide explains how to tell.
- Gates and outbuildings. On a Plantation Acres lot, add the driveway gate, barn and shed padlocks (gate locks).
- Sliders — does the latch truly catch? (sliding-door locks)
- Pool gate and pool door — self-closing and self-latching? (pool-gate latches)
- Smart locks and garage openers — delete old codes and remove the previous owner from any app.
- Guard gate — in a community like Hawks Landing, get your guest list set up so you can let service people in later.
Two honest tips before you book
- Check your home warranty. Some plans sold with a house cover a move-in rekey or refund part of it. Read your contract first; our invoice lists each lock so you can file a claim.
- Look for Kwikset SmartKey. If your locks have a small slot beside the keyway, a key that works and Kwikset's little reset tool let you reset them yourself — no locksmith needed. Other brands need new pins.
What to bring
Photo ID plus your closing papers or deed. If utilities aren't in your name yet, the closing documents are enough.
